Join us for a day of theory and practice of safe spearfishing and freediving with experienced AFC members.

Talks

  • 11:00 – 11:45 – Coast Guard / Police Divers talk
  • 12:00 – 13:00 – Safety Diving Theory
  • 13:00 – 14:00 – Safety Diving Practical (optional)

Practical sessions

AFC members will take small groups out to lake Pupuke for a guided freediving session from about 1pm.

All dives take place on a special freediving rig where the diver is attached to a rope during the dive. It is a safe and enjoyable way to experience depth.

Every session lasts approximately 45 minutes and includes:

  • finding the right amount of weight you carry on your weight belt
  • gear check and advice
  • diving to 15m or less
  • rescue practice
  • tips and help from AFC members

Entry requirements

  • 18 or more years old
  • to not have medical conditions that prevent safe freediving
  • to be confident in the water

There are no entry requirements for prior freediving or spearfishing experience.

 What to bring

  • a wetsuit, 5mm preferred
  • a mask and snorkel
  • a weight belt with weights
  • fins
  • a water bottle
