Community Dive Day with Te Kohuroa Rewilding

AFC is joining forces with Te Kohuroa Rewilding Initiative as we help to restore Te Kohuroa’s/Matheson Bay’s kelp forest. Get hands on experience with this community led marine conservation program and learn about the importance of this beautiful marine environment.

What is a Kelp Restoration Day?

• We will meet at 8:30 AM in the parking lot
• Meet the team and have a briefing
• Get into buddy pairs and go for a dive
• During the dive we will remove kina (sea urchins) from a section of the reef to support kelp regrowth. Volunteers can either collect the kina for eating or crack them in situ on the reef.
• After the dive, it’s time to unwind and get social!

We’ll fire up the BBQ for a delicious lunch, giving everyone a chance to relax and enjoy the stunning surroundings. It’s the perfect time to connect with fellow club members, share stories from the dive, and soak in the beauty of Te Kohuroa. And if the mood strikes, we’ll most likely head back out for another dive to explore more of the reef and enjoy the water. It’s a great way to wrap up a rewarding day!

Te Kohuroa Rewilding Initiative is a community-led conservation project working to restore the marine ecosystem and kelp forests at Te Kohuroa Matheson Bay. The Pilot Program runs between September 2024 and June 2025 with conservation activities for the whole community to get involved in
