It’s been a grind, but finally managed to become an AIDA Master Instructor (and by the looks of things I’m the only MI that’s active and based in NZ). That means I’m already planning this coming summer, when I’ll be adding AIDA4 courses to the mix with @aucklandfreedivingclub . So keep and eye out if you’re keen to start diving deeper, wanting to learn Mouthfill, or looking to become an Assistant Instructor 🤙

Epic memories were made last week on the AIDA 4 St Epic memories were made last week on the AIDA 4 Star course with @willtrubridge. Nate, Allison, Cam, Adrian, myself Kat, and our newest member Hugh were joined by six dedicated freedivers from around the country to learn from the world record holder himself, and sponge up advice from our NZ-based instructors Brad James @freediveproject, @kristinezipfel, and AFC lifetime member John Wright.

It's been a great opportunity to meet Will, who has been an honourary member of AFC since 2017, in person and soak up all the knowledge he shared wif us. Lake Taupō treated us with perfect conditions for all our depth days, which made for great diving and a nice change from Lake Pupuke. Nobody really wanted to leave after spending four days together catching up with old buddies, making new friends, and talking freediving to our hearts' content.

We came away with fresh inspiration, new ideas on how to improve our diving and enjoy it more, and a mission to share what we've learned within our clubs.

A special thank you to Nate @sicppy from @freedivingnewzealand for making this event happen! We're hoping to follow up this course with another, bigger event next year, so stay tuned. Thanks also to @tran.lawrence for coming along to take some photos!

It's the news many Aucklanders have waited weeks to hear - from 11:59pm on Tuesday 5 October those in the big smoke will be able to hit the water again.

Here’s everything you need to know about the new restrictions at Level 3:

🛥️ You will now be able to go boating — including fishing from a motorised boat or vessel, sailing, scuba diving, jetskiing and camp overnight.
🛥️ There are some restrictions — outdoor activities with other people are limited to 2 households, and a maximum of 10 people.
🛥️ If a boat has an enclosed space, only one household or bubble can go boating.
🛥️ If a boat does not have an enclosed space, 2 households or a maximum of 10 people can participate.
🛥️ At Alert Level 3, you must continue to wear a face covering at certain places, and to keep 2 metres away from people who are not in your bubble at the boat ramp. Scan in to keep track of where you go.
🛥️ The easing of Alert Level 3 restrictions will not extend to the Waikato Alert Level 3 area.
🛥️ The air and road boundaries between Auckland and the rest of the New Zealand, including the Alert Level 3 area in Waikato, will remain in place.

But most importantly given your pride and joy has likely been sitting around for a while, do the old girl a favour and give her the once over before you head out! Remember the essentials:

✅ Log a trip report with the Coastguard App
✅ Carry at least 2 forms of water proof communication
✅ Wear a life jacket
✅ Check your local marine weather to see what’s going on out there before you hit the water
✅ Look out for yourself, your loved ones and most importantly enjoy yourself

See you out there and know that Coastguard Radio has your back!
