Qualified freediviers may bypass our usual induction process if they can demonstrate a sufficient level of freediving skills during a safety check. This shortcut to club membership is only available to holders of a freediving certificate or those with experience training with other freediving clubs.

To request joining the club without an induction:

1. fill in and submit the form further down the page
2. a club member will be in contact to arrange the safety check at one of our training sessions
3. pay your membership fee to the club’s bank account after completing the safety check

About the safety check

The safety check involves a quick chat about your freediving experience before the training session and demonstration of your skills in the water:

• we may ask a few freediving theory questions, e.g. O2/CO2 effects or to demonstrate a certain technique, e.g. the grip you use for pool rescues
• you will have to demonstrate a pool rescue, correct breathing practices, safe conduct in the water and at least a 25m DYN dive

The safety check should take only a few minutes and there will be no opportunity to teach you any skills during that time.
If you require a refresher or cannot successfully complete the safety check we suggest attending one of our induction sessions.

Club membership

There is no cost for the safety check. The club will grant you a free one day membership so you can access the pool and be in the same lane with other club members.

You will have to fill in a separate club membership form for safety and liability reasons once your request has been accepted.

After successful completion of the safety check

You can join any AFC pool training session after completing the check and paying your membership fee. Depth training requires a separate induction in Lake Pupuke, also free of charge.
